One Simple Preparedness Tool Can Give Your Family Up to 100 Gallons of Emergency Water

When most people think about emergency preparedness, food, flashlights, generators and batteries usually come to mind first.

But there is one resource we simply cannot do without:

WATER.

A severe storm, extended power outage, water-main break, boil-water advisory or other infrastructure problem can suddenly make the water coming from your faucet unavailable or questionable to drink.

That's why having an emergency water plan should be one of the foundations of every household preparedness strategy.

This week we're looking at an inexpensive preparedness product that solves a very specific problem: How can you quickly store a large amount of fresh water when you have advance warning that your water supply could be interrupted?

The answer may already be sitting in your bathroom.

Meet the waterBOB

The waterBOB Emergency Drinking Water Storage System is essentially a large, food-grade water bladder designed to fit inside a standard bathtub.

Instead of filling an uncovered bathtub with emergency water, you place the waterBOB inside the tub, connect its filling sleeve to the bathtub faucet and fill the bladder with fresh cold tap water.

Depending on the size of your bathtub, the waterBOB can hold up to 100 gallons of water.

A two-week reserve would be approximately:

4 people × 1 gallon × 14 days = 56 gallons

The waterBOB isn't something you fill today and leave sitting in your bathtub waiting for an emergency.

Think of it as rapid-deployment emergency water storage.

Keep it unopened with your emergency supplies and deploy it when you receive advance warning of an event that could threaten your water supply.

Severe Weather

A major storm, tornado outbreak, hurricane, winter storm or ice storm may provide enough warning to fill the waterBOB before conditions deteriorate.

Extended Power Outages

Municipal water systems generally have backup capabilities, but prolonged electrical disruptions can eventually affect pumping and treatment infrastructure.

Homes using private wells face an even more immediate problem: no electricity usually means no well pump.

Water-Main Problems

A major water-main break can interrupt service or result in a precautionary boil-water advisory.

Flooding

Floodwater can potentially affect municipal water infrastructure and private wells.

Infrastructure or Cyber Incidents

As we've discussed recently, America's water infrastructure is increasingly dependent upon computerized monitoring and control systems.

A cyberattack doesn't necessarily mean contaminated drinking water, but disruption of pumping, treatment or monitoring operations is another reason households should have some independent water capability.

How It Works

Deployment is intentionally simple.

1. Place the bladder in your bathtub.

Lay the waterBOB flat with its filling connections facing upward and positioned near the faucet.

2. Connect it to the faucet.

Attach the supplied filling sleeve to the waterBOB and place the other end over your bathtub faucet.

3. Fill with cold tap water.

Depending on water pressure and bathtub capacity, filling generally takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

4. Seal the bladder.

After filling, remove the filling sleeve and securely replace the cap.

5. Dispense water when needed.

The included siphon pump allows you to transfer water into pitchers or other containers without opening the entire bladder.

⚠️ Important Safety Note - Consider Weight

Water is heavy. At approximately 8.34 pounds per gallon, 100 gallons of water weighs about 834 pounds—before considering the weight of the bathtub itself.

Never exceed the capacity of your bathtub and floors, and be particularly cautious with older homes, second-floor bathrooms, unusually large tubs, or floors with unknown or questionable structural support.

If you have concerns about whether your bathtub and floor can safely support a large volume of stored water, do not fill the waterBOB to its maximum capacity. Use a smaller volume or consult a qualified building professional regarding the floor's load-bearing capacity.

Remember: 100 gallons is the waterBOB's maximum capacity - not a requirement to fill it with 100 gallons.

One Important Limitation

There is something every waterBOB owner needs to understand:

You need advance warning to use it.

If a water main unexpectedly ruptures and officials immediately tell residents not to use the water, it may already be too late to fill your waterBOB from the faucet.

The same applies to an unexpected contamination event.

That's why we don't consider the waterBOB a replacement for stored emergency water.

Instead, it should be another layer in your water preparedness plan.

We recommend thinking about emergency water in three layers.

Layer 1 — Water Already Stored

Maintain bottled water, water containers or another dedicated supply that is immediately available regardless of what happens to the municipal system.

Layer 2 — Rapid Emergency Storage

When a significant storm or other predictable threat approaches, you can rapidly add potentially dozens of gallons to your household reserve.

Layer 3 — Water Filtration & Purification

Have the ability to process additional water if your stored supply is exhausted.

A quality filtration system provides another layer of resilience when an emergency lasts longer than expected.

Storage + Rapid Storage + Filtration

That combination gives a household considerably more flexibility than relying on cases of bottled water alone.

A Few Things to Remember

The manufacturer describes the waterBOB as a single-use emergency product, so don't plan on repeatedly filling and storing the same bladder.

Never fill the bladder higher than the edge of your bathtub.

Keep sharp objects and pets away from the bladder.

The manufacturer also recommends keeping the filled bladder away from direct sunlight.

Most importantly:

Fill it before the emergency affects your water supply - not afterward.

Is It Worth Keeping One?

For many households, we think the waterBOB fills an interesting gap in emergency preparedness.

It requires almost no permanent storage space.

You don't have to keep a 55-gallon drum sitting in your garage.

And when you have advance warning of a potential disruption, you can convert otherwise unused bathtub space into a substantial temporary water reserve.

It's the kind of preparedness product you may own for years and never use.

That's perfectly fine.

Like a fire extinguisher, generator or emergency radio, the value isn't how frequently you use it.

The value is having it available on the day you actually need it.
